GETTING STARTED IN BMX:
So you are interested in the world's newest Olympic sport? Great! Let us be the first to welcome you to Cape Cod BMX.....where no one sits on the bench!
Here are a few things you need to know to get started:
BMX Defined:
• Bicycle Motocross or BMX is a sport in which a manual bike is used to maneuver over jumps, obstacles, and turns.
• Racing is structured by age and classes, including novice, intermediate, girls, cruiser, and expert.
• With classes broken down by proficiency, there are great chances to win.
• You can come as often or as little as you wish., but the more you race and practice, the sooner you will win!!
• We are sanctioned by the ABA, American Bicycle Association. They provide us with the rules, regulations, and point structure.
Membership:
• You'll need an ABA membership to race or practice at the track and we can take care of that right in Registration; it's just a simple 1 page form.
• The ABA offers 2 types of memberships, the first family membership is $45 and the gold membership which is $100.
• We at Cape Cod BMX offer our gold members free practice at our track for the year. This can be quite a significant savings for our riders!!
• Your ABA membership is valid for an entire calendar year and can be used at over 250 ABA tracks throughout the US.
Security:
• Cape Cod BMX is located on a MA Military Reservation.
• To gain access, you must have all of the following items:
* Drivers license
* Guest pass from our website, this can be found on the security page
• Once you become a member, a security form will be filled out and your new membership car along with your driver's license will be used to gain access.
• We ask that everyone be courteous to all base personnel at all times.
Equipment:
• You will need a bike that has 20" wheels or smaller to race in class.
• All reflectors, kickstands, pegs, chain guards, fenders etc. must be removed from you bike.
• Bikes must be in good working condition as well as having a working break and end caps for handlebars.
• A helmet must be worn and a full face helmet is strongly suggested.
• Long sleeves and long pants are required.
• You must where closed shoes, such as sneakers.
• There is loaner equipment available at the track, but we suggest bringing your own because it is given out on a first come first serve basis.
Practice:
• Our practice schedule rotates throughout the season, so always check the schedule page before coming out to the track.
• We practice on Tuesday and switch to Friday for the summer months. Practice time for both days is 5-8pm.
• This is an open practice, so you can come and stay for the whole practice or just as long as you like.
• The cost for practice is $5, but if you are a Cape Cod BMX gold member then practice is free.
Training:
• There are many training sessions for riders of all skill level, scheduled throughout the season.
• New rider orientations are held on an add needed basis and are a perfect way for a new rider to learn the BMX basics.
• Structured training nights are held twice a week and broken down into class level. These are typically taught by our experienced racers and help build BMX skills.
• Other clinics may be available through the season, taught be various pros covering a variety of skills.
• Please check the schedule page for dates and times for all of the training sessions.
Racing:
• Our racing schedule rotates throughout the season, so always check the schedule page before coming out to the track.
• We race on Saturday and then switch to Tuesday for the summer months. Registration time for both days is 5-6:30pm.
• The cost for racing is $10 for a single point race.
• We do have a few scheduled double point and triple point races which are $20 and $30 respectfully which are on our posted race schedule.
Awards:
• There's a variety of awards given out for racing throughout the season.These include:
• trophies, ribbons, medals, track bucks, saver stamps, certificates, t-shirts, plates, backpacks,and much more!!
• For our local single point races our policy is as follows:
*3 riders in a class-trophy for 1st place
*4 riders in a class-trophy for 1st and 2nd place.
*5 riders or more in a class-trophy for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
*All other riders will receive ribbons.
*All new riders receive a medal after their first race.
Spectators:
• We encourage all family and friends to come out and watch you race!
• There are bleachers at the track as well as a full service concession stand.
• Races at Cape Cod BMX are always free for spectators.
• Please make sure you print off the current month guest pass and have you license available when entering the base for security.
• We ask that you be courteous to all the other spectators, parents, volunteers, track officials, racers, and base personnel.
Volunteering:
• Cape Cod BMX is a non-profit organization, one that is solely run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise because of their dedication to our track.
• It takes a minimum of 15 people to run a race; we are always looking for more help.
• If you are interested in volunteering on a race, practice, training, or maintenance night please email us or stop by Registration.
• Our volunteers make our track what it is. We could not do this without all of you!
